(October 1, 2021) – Last night, at approximately 8:08 pm, the Peotone Fire Protection District (PFPD) responded to a call for the multiple vehicle accident on Interstate 57 near milepost 331. While en route to the incident, fire crews were advised of possible patient ejection and entrapment. Supporting units from the Manhattan Fire Protection District and Monee Fire Protection District were then dispatched to assist Peotone fire crews. All three departments responded to the scene within 12-14 minutes.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, they found a three-vehicle accident, two of which were heavily damaged. Firefighters immediately began stabilizing the vehicles and triage. Due to the severity of the incident, an extra EMS Box alarm was called. Several other fire departments provided support.

A total of five patients were reported, three of which were in critical condition. There was one fatality, and ambulances from Peotone and Manhattan transported two patients to nearby hospitals. One patient was transported from the scene by helicopter.

The scene was later turned over to the Illinois State Police. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Multiple agencies were on the scene and at the Peotone Fire Station to cover any additional calls for service during that time. These include Manhattan Fire Protection District, Monee Fire Protection District, Beecher Fire Protection District, Frankfort Fire Protection District, New Lenox Fire Protection District, University Park Fire Department, Crete Fire Department, Crete Township Fire Department, Steger Estates Fire Department, Bourbonnais Fire Department, Grant Park Fire Department, and Richton Park Fire Department.
