PEOTONE, IL – The Village of Peotone will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on February 9th from 1 PM to 6 PM at Peotone Fire Protection District, 7550 W. Joliet Rd., Peotone, IL 60468.

“The Village of Peotone and the Peotone Fire Protection District is committed to strengthening our community and helping meet hospital and patient needs through blood donations,” said Steve Malone, Fire Chief. “This blood drive is our way of giving staff, colleagues, and neighbors an opportunity to help save lives.”

Blood is a perishable product that can only come from volunteer blood donors. With someone in the U.S. needing blood every two seconds, blood products must be constantly replenished, according to the Red Cross.

The Red Cross is experiencing the worst blood shortage in over a decade. The dangerously low blood supply levels have forced some hospitals to defer patients from major surgery, including organ transplants.

“We urge community members to donate blood and help ensure that patients in local hospitals have a supply of blood ready and waiting before an emergency occurs. There’s no better feeling than knowing that your blood donation may give someone a second chance at life.”

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, and A negative. According to the Red Cross, type O negative is the universal blood type that can be safely transfused to anyone and is often used to treat trauma patients.
